Applications

  • Street-level tram and light-rail lines where flush running surfaces are required.

  • Urban junctions, crossings and turnouts.

  • Tight-radius curves and gutters where the grooved head must integrate with pavement.

Material & Manufacturing Standards

To withstand the frequent start-stop cycles, heavy loads, and environmental wear of urban transit, the 54G4 rail adheres to strict material and production criteria:
  • High-Strength Material: Constructed from pearlitic steel, a material renowned for its excellent wear resistance and fatigue performance. It meets two common strength grades:
    • R260: Tensile strength ≥ 880 MPa, suitable for standard tram lines with moderate traffic volume.
    • R350HT: Heat-treated for enhanced hardness (350–390 HBW), ideal for high-traffic routes or sections with frequent braking (e.g., downtown areas, stations).
  • Precision Manufacturing: Produced via advanced hot rolling, followed by precision milling to ensure groove dimensional accuracy. It also supports continuous welded rail (CWR) technology—via specialized welding processes (e.g., flash butt welding)—to reduce rail joints, minimize vibration, and lower long-term maintenance costs.

Installation, welding & maintenance notes

  • Field welding: compatible with standard grooved-rail repair techniques (aluminothermic/thermite welding) — use qualified procedures that account for groove geometry.

  • Embedding & drainage: ensure proper groove fillers, bedding and drainage design to avoid water entrapment and premature settlement in the paved carriageway.

  • Maintenance: periodic inspection and reprofiling or surfacing of the head is common; the selected steel grade strongly affects maintenance intervals.
