Manufacturing Process
Precision cutting — Laser or plasma cutting to exact blank dimensions.
Roll forming — Rolling machines form the plate into cylindrical shells.
Specialized welding — Longitudinal seam closure and circumferential joining; for very large drums, alternating internal/external bevel welds are used to improve weld fracture resistance.
Stress relief & heat treatment (optional) — Applied where needed to reduce residual stresses.
NDT & inspection — Radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT) or magnetic particle (MT) inspection of welds.
Static/dynamic tests — Runout & dynamic balancing, no-load and load winding tests before shipment.
Dimensional verification — Diameter, length, ovality, concentricity and flange hole positions checked to tolerance.
Strength & Rope-Groove Design
Wall thickness design: Optimized using elastic-plastic theory based on working loads — wall thickness can be adjusted to match rope diameter and duty cycle.
Strength checks: Radial, tangential and axial stress states are evaluated to guarantee safety margins.
Rope-groove specs: Groove bottom radius = (0.53 − 0.6) × rope diameter. Groove lead angle ≤ 3.5° to prevent rope derailment.
Layered winding strategy: For multi-layer winding (high lift), pitch and groove design are optimized to minimize rope wear and ensure smooth rope transfer.
